I've come to believe it is we who crave punitive atonement. We need to feel some punishment is meted out. I think that's also why Dante's hell still holds sway in evangelical circles. We're petty like that. We want someone else to pay for or failings, but we crave horrific retribution against everyone we can look down upon for any and every reason.
