I've come to believe that it is we who lacked the ability to choose differently. Humanity seems to need some punative consequence to believe forgiveness and transformative change are possible. I believe it is Jesus' life lived and His teachings which bring that transformative change. Humans needed some proof of suffering to accept the power of those lessons and the change they could bring.
