I've often said something similar.

The God of that religion-thingy we call "The Church" is such a small, petty, frightened thing. It bears no resemblance to anything Jesus told us of God. It bears no resemblance to the Jesus whose live demonstrated radical love, radical grace, and radical forgiveness. They're god is so small he has no space for hope.
