I've thought a lot about this too, for my little immigrant family. We actually tried back in 2016. We wanted to go to Germany, where my Iranian husband had asylum before he came to the States. But, we found we weren't eligible to Germany and Canada because we aren't in that cadre of Americans they want to migrate there. A sick, crippled old artist/poet and an old service-sector worker just aren't valuable enough for Germany or Canada to want us on our own.
My grown son is now in that cadre, with is EMS training and certifications. His partner will be too when she gets her psychology degree. They think about it as something to do if they decide to start a family after she's through college.
