My dad joined the Navy to be a pilot. Then, they wouldn't let him because he had glaucoma. So, he became an airplane mechanic, specializing in ejector seats.

Of course, that meant he couldn't get private life insurance until he retired because ejector seat mechanic was deemed too dangerous an occupation for life insurance coverage.
