My folks gatherings were such a sensory overload for our Gray, who is neurodivergent. My kin thought it was just a matter not allowing him to be bothered by the hullaballoo around him. They thought he should be punished for misbehavior when he got too wild and hyper, or forced to be a happy part of the bedlam if he tried to seek solitude when he was overwhelmed. Both reactions are caused by sensory overload. You can't punish it away or force them out of it.
