My mom went through a similar purging. The preacher said "rock music is evil" and talked about reverse recorded satanic messages on popular records. She gathered up all our records and cassettes, ripped all our posters off our walls, and started burning them on a fire in our backyard grill. When I tried to convince her to stop by pointing out she had all those Elvis records and memorabilia she'd collected when he died, well… she made us get up into the attic and hand them down to her, then threw them on the fire too.

We were left speechless, as you can imagine. I still have pangs of mourning for my White Album, still in the cellophane wrapper, given to me by her sister, my Aunt Shirley. [sigh]

Sadly… mother never came out of that "phase" and daddy and my three sisters pretty much joined her there.
