Oh honey, yes it IS an American thing. We moved around a lot, trailing my military father from post to post. Everywhere we went, paper plates were abundant. And, it's not an old thing either (unlike ancient old me). My son even had them in the elementary school cafeteria — they were served on paper plates and ate with plastic sporks.
