People do actually say stuff like that. I've been married to my Persian husband for over 30 wonderful years. But, because I'm sick and disabled and chubby, there are still people who think he married me just to get his citizenship. People thought they were "well-meaning" when they warned me against marrying him. We'd been married a dozen years and had a child and my own kin still thought he'd married me to get citizenship.

He was on a student visa when we met. He was so concerned people thought such ignorance that he delayed getting his greencard. They laid that accusation with my husband too. After the requisite requisite three years of marriage, he resisted getting his citizenship because he felt like people "will look me as if it's the only reason I married you." I had to badger him for the better part of a year get him to start the process.
