Sadly, all too often, these are folks who feel empowered to command service workers and denigrate those the see as beneath them. Anyone on assistance would be beneath them. And, it's as if they believe service workers are their own personal servants.

When my husband was a store manager for BKC, he saw it all the time. People pulled up to the drive in window or strolled up to the counter and acted as if they were lord and master of everyone working there for the measily $5 price of their meal. They demand red carpet luxury treatment and servile groveling for the price of a cheap burger and fries.
