Sadly, manipulating scripture for imposing control is a long standing practice. Some scholars even find that the Levitical strictures against men with men was added at a much later date, and is not original to the oral texts first set down in writing. And, of course, we know that the KJV was manipulated to ensconce the Divine Right of Kings in British readers.
