Poetry of the Mundane
Secret Smiling Sweetness
Can you guess what the poem is about?
I love composing “poetry of the mundane.” This kind of poetry when you compose a poem about something very ordinary, like whatever happens to be to, for example, your left at this moment. It’s a fairly common practice among poets. Waxing poetic an ordinary something helps stretch the poetry muscle in your writing sinews.
Okay… Eww. Let’s not continue with that line of metaphor.
For me, the challenge with writing poetry of the mundane is in not every naming the ordinary whatever the poem is about. If I can add a flair of the sensuous, all the better. I find it rather entertaining to compose lines that make readers think.
Below is my newest offering. After reading my poem, I challenge you, Martin Morrison, to compose your own lines on something mundane. Remember, you must NOT use the word of the topic to describe it in your poem. And, no using words that rhyme with your chosen topic.
If you write a poem about bricks, you cannot use the word “brick” in your poem. Other possible topics: a butter dish, a coffee, an orange, a carving knife, your treasured teacup, a favorite writing pen or pencil, etc. Try to make it sexy or even a little naughty (looking at you, Jason Provencio).
I’d love all my readers to try this challenge. Tag me in your posts if you do. If you’re a member of WE PAW Bloggers, send your drafts to the pub.
