That bit about "spare the rod" is one of the most often misinterpreted passages. Literally, the "rod" was the shepherd's rod. Shepherds did not use their rod to beat their flocks. The rods were used to guide and to protect the flocks. So, selective biblical literalists literally have that passage wrong.
