That's because the loudest voices are the ones cloaking themselves in a veneer of religiosity while doing their damndest to enforce a theocratic prison upon the world. Those loudest voices rage in fear and hatred.
"Christian" literally means "followers of Christ." To follow Christ – Jesus – means to try to live by His example. He told us to be known as His follower by our love for others. It's a simple metric: God is love and God's love is given in grace. What scripture meant by the verses saying we may know them by their fruit [Matt. 7:15–20] is that we may discern who is His and who is their own by the good or ill they do in the world.
In every person's words or deeds, is compassion and empathy? Is there love, unbounded and full of grace? It doesn't matter what they profess otherwise. If love and grace are not there, it cannot be of God.
And remember, Jesus never told anyone to go out and start a religion. He told them to tell the world of the good news of God's love and grace. That is salvation for the hearts and minds of humanity. What love lies in every person's soul, in my estimation, is where God may be found.
