That's not correct according to the article you referenced. Sixty-seven percent of democrats and forty-five percent of Independents do NOT believe that. When you account for the demographic breakdown, that means the majority do NOT believe it. There are more democrats than republicans. There are more independents than republicans, and more independents combined are moderate, liberal, and progressive than conservative. The actual numbers of republicans is relatively small.
In fact, I read recently that red-state republicans in Congress only represent areas with 19% of red-state populations. And, through gerrymandering to suppress urban area voting in their states, their actual red-state republican voting base may be as little as 6% of the red-state populations. The conservative base overall (including conservative independents) is around 36% of the total national population.
