Independence Day for who?

We’re fast approaching that over-the-top celebration for “the land of the free” of American Independence. But, for which Americans? For whom are we celebrating? True freedom was codified into the founding of this nation for people who are not women… not Black or people of color… not lesbians… not gay… not bisexual… not trans… not queer. Today, it’s codified for people who are not Jewish… not Muslim… not Buddhist… only for people who are Christian. Specifically, Independence Day is only for straight, white, cis-men.

No, this day is not celebrating my freedom. The 4th feels like an affront to all of us now under the dogma of our subversive SCOTUS, six justices who have subverted the will of the people and made legal and constitutional precedent meaningless. They have made the US Constitution itself meaningless by harking back to a British witch-burning Puritan judge from the 1600s who said “a husband cannot be guilty of a rape committed upon his lawful wife because of their mutual matrimonial consent and contract.” In his leaked draft opinion, that is who Alito quoted for his reasons for overturning Roe v. Wade, claiming abortion rights were not “deeply rooted” in America’s history and traditions.

By Alito’s and his fellow extremist justices’ metric, guess what else is not “deeply rooted” in our history and traditions…
