The best way was to use a new wire brush, like the ones for cleaning outdoor grills. You start with an actual rough stone. Use the flat side to roughen strategic patches of the denim. Then, dip the brush in bleach, and lightly scrub at those roughened patches of the denim. Then, you wash the garment a couple of times and a more controlled stone washed look is revealed.
