The EC needs to go. It's been obsolete since at least the 1950s. It was designed for a country where most people couldn't read. Where news and correspondence could be weeks or months reaching them.
Since the 1950s, the ability to read has been ubiquitous. Most people have had cars and the Interstate and public road systems have made travel common, correspondence within days, and news immediate with daily papers and broadcast news. All of which negated any rational argument to continue the EC.
Since the end of the 1990s, information and news access have been instantaneous. And, incidentally, the EC has been increasingly corrupted to suppress progressive and liberal voting blocs, through gerrymandering voting districts which allowed the GOP to seize local and state power – and by doing so, seize the electoral process in those states.
That's how Al Gore won the popular (citizen) vote in 2000, but George W. Bush was given the EC when the GOP secretary of state in FL (where Jeb Bush was also governor at the time) gave the state to Bush. Gore challenged that in the coursts; it went to the SCOTUS and the conservative majority gave it to Bush. Then in 2016, we had Hillary Clinton win the popular vote by three million more votes, but the EC was so much further corrupted that it gave Trump the office. Biden won by over eight Million in 2020, but the GOP and Trump are still contesting that with the Big Lie, and the MAGA set stormed the capitol to try to overturn what should be an indisputable win for Biden.
Democrats have done some gerrymandering, but not to on a scale approaching what the GOP has done in red states. And, what the GOP did in the past is nothing on the scale of what they have already made clear they intend to do nationally if they get back into power in DC. The GOP is all in as the Dominionist theocratic white identity anti-democracy party now. They even want another civil war in the hardcore MAGA set.
