The GOP Have Become Idolators
They way the rightwing talks about Trump makes my brain hurt.
The rightwing conservatives aren’t even trying to be subtle anymore. Not only do they have a golden idol of Trump on display at their annual CPAC convention, their stage is the actual Odal rune of the Nazi SS! They’ve abandoned all pretense of American democracy. They have become the constructors of a simulacrum — their own post-reality.
According to Wikipedia, a “simulacrum(simulacra): Something that replaces reality with its representation… an image without the substance or qualities of the original. It is no longer a question of imitation, nor duplication, nor even parody.”
The event organizers claim it’s just a coincidental appearance of an odal rune. Personally however, and predicated on their long history of subterfugal use of white nationalist symbolism, I fully believe the shape of that stage was purposeful. They think we’re too stupid to see it. Or, more likely, they just don’t care if we see it any longer. They have 74+ million supporters who not only appear to embrace all their alternative reality discordance, but will wage actual armed insurrection to impose their post-reality upon us all.
It’s beyond disgusting. They way the rightwing talks about Trump makes my brain hurt; it’s all so jarring and discordant in the light of reality.
The simulacrum of the GOP is grounded in glaring regressivism. Regressivism is an opposing stance to progressive social agendas; typically, it is an extreme conservative opposition to progressivism or liberalism; it is an extreme social agenda that seeks to halt and turn back the social progress of the modern era.
In the throes of this regresivism, the GOP has embraced a false reality and abandoned the principals for which the party long claimed to stand.
Indeed, the GOP Trump Cult has gone full-on golden calf at this year’s so-called “Conservative” Political Action Committee (CPAC). This ludicrous statue of their cult’s graven image was actually wheeled into the convention center for display at the event. Sycophantic followers proceeded to fawn over the idol. CPAC bows to a golden idol of Trump. Recall, these are the same people defending Confederate monuments. It’s all around idolatry. They have traded the God who is love for a golden jackass.
The artist, Tommy Zegan, said of the statue “…every aspect of the statue — which puts Trump in a suit jacket, American-flag-themed shorts and flip-flop sandals — is intended to be symbolic. ‘The coat and tie is the fact that he’s a professional, he’s a businessman,” Zegan said. ‘The red tie symbolizes he’s a Republican. The red white and blue is that he’s a patriot. The fact that he’s wearing thongs and shorts is that he’s at the age where he should be retired. He should be at the beach right now.’ But when asked if he would like for Trump to ease into retirement or run for President again in 2024, Zegan was emphatic. ‘I would be, yes, ecstatic,” he said. “If he wants it to happen, it will happen.’”
Taken in part or in whole, there was little at this year’s CPAC that was reflective of American democracy and much which is antithetical to the Christian evangelicalism that group claims to espouse.
The Scripture they themselves insist is immutable and literal decries and condemns what they do. Here are a few of the texts from the Old and New Testaments:
- CEB Exodus 20:3 You must have no other gods before me. 4 Do not make an idol for yourself — no form whatsoever — of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth. 5 Do not bow down to them or worship them
- Deuteronomy 4:16 Don’t ruin everything and make an idol for yourself: a form of any image, any likeness — male or female
- Deuteronomy 5:8 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 9 You shall not bow down to them or worship them
- Deuteronomy 27:15 “Cursed is anyone who makes an idol or an image
- Isaiah 44:9 Idol-makers are all as nothing; their playthings do no good. Their promoters neither see nor know anything, so they ought to be ashamed.
- Habakkuk 2:18 Of what value is an idol, when its potter carves it, or a cast image that has been shaped? It is a teacher of lies
- Acts 7:41 That’s when they made an ido… and began to celebrate what they had made with their own hands.
- RSV Acts 20:30 …From among your own selves will arise men speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.
The religion itself, which they’ve hollowed out and in whose skin they now cloak themselves, tells us what they are from Jesus’ own words in KJV Matthew 6:24 “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot* serve God and mammon” and in Luke 16:13 “No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot* serve God and mammon.”
They are, as I’ve said for years now, “mammonites” and Trump is their mammonite messiah.
As John Pavlovitz wrote in his recent blog
“Watching the collective soul-selling of my fellow Christians here in America over the past five years has been something that has grieved me more than I can measure or accurately describe. It’s been particularly disheartening to watch ancient religious history repeating, and worse — to realize that nearly every disfiguring ugliness here in America: from the violent parade of white nationalism to the defiant anti-mask pandemic-deniers to the propagators of an abject election fraud lie to the suppressors of the voices and votes of people of color — is coming from professed Christians.”
