The pain and discomfort aren't about the stair treads. It's about the motion and changing distribution of weight in climbing and descending. For example, I'd gotten to a point where some days I could not lift my foot up the step, having to drag it over the lip of the stairs. And, coming down was worse than going up the stairs – every bend of my knees and hips and ankles was painful on bad days.
