The problem is that the original ancient Hebrew had three words that all get translated to "pride" in English. There were separate words in all the original languages. The ancient Hebrew had separate words for self-respect, for unwarranted or puffed up self importance or conceit, and for arrogance. In English, pride could mean all of those concepts; intended meanings can only be gleaned from the context in which the term is used. The "pride" in those scriptural strictures are more akin to the Greek word "hubris," and far removed from the idea of self-respect.
Christianish bigots may not know those specifics. But, they know the contextual differences in the use of the term. They just conveniently turn to those "gotcha" scriptures to demonize Pride as what the texts are about. Then, they conveniently ignore the intended meanings and celebrate the hubris of someone who is the epitome of "vanity, haughtiness, and arrogance" – i.e., Tangerine Caligula.
