The Word of God is said to be true. The Bible is not the Word, according to Christian's own text.

As to the general truth of scripture… While the people who wrote the words believed what they wrote, and what they wrote may have been true for their culture, in that period, in the throes of whatever events were unfolding around them, that does not translate to truth for someone in a different place and time.

Biblical literalists want to hold humanity static and unchanging – to eliminate evolving society. But, even the book itself relates the evolution of societies. The way we live and think and behave evolves. Humanity is anything but static and unchanging.

Any other writing from the past, we automatically place in historical context, from Beowulf and Chaucer to Shakespeare and Dante. But, suggest such contextualization to selective literalists and you're deemed apostate.
