There is no legislated regulation of those supplemnts. They are entirely up to the industry producing them – and they don't even have to prove the claims made for taking them. Taking those supplements can also be detrimental. The binding agents used to make them pills is not processed by our bodies, and often not expelled as they should be.
For example: I know a woman who was taking loads of supplements, in place of food, to lose weight. Those binding agents clogged her stomach and coated the stomach lining. She almost died and had to have a surgical procedure to clear the obstruction in the sphincter from her stomach to her intestines. She also had to drink that laxative for colonoscopy patients multiple times, and have a series of colonics to clear her intestines of the supplement residue. All because she took someone's unsolicited advice on how to lose weight. She lost the weight. But, her health was permanently damaged and she almost died.
