They have created the punative system humans want. Humans have a need to see punshment meted out, so the Evangelicalist religiosity casts God as the punisher. Humans made choices that led to the Crucifixion before they could believe forgiveness – they had to have a sacrifice, a demonstration of sacrificial love. Humans could have made choices which accepted the grace of forgivness without a punative afterlife.

There are consequences to choices in life and we must all live those consequences. We humans seem incapable of separating consequences in life – especially those demanded by us – from God. Too often, humanity doesn't seem able to accept the radical forgiveness through grace of our God who is love. Is it any wonder, though?

Too many of us have stunted ideas and/or exprience of that love that is God. We think love is something to hoard and guard from others. We cannot know that love and grace while we are busy condemning most of the rest of our fellow humanity to eternal torment.
