Those "gotcha" verses, from most biblical scholarship I've read, were about temple practices (temple prostitution was common in ancient religious practices) and behaviors which threatened family relationships.
As for Paul, he was a Pharisee – a ritual legalistic sect within the temple society.
As Dr. Mickey Efird repeatedly advised in his studies, when we read scripture, we should read with discernment, trying to understand what is historical or period or cultural interpretations of men and what are revelations of the true nature of God. There is only one declarative statement of what God is in all the scripture; that statement is, "God is love" and it is followed by "If we know love, we know God."
When I read scripture through that lens, I do not read those gotcha passages as God condeming anyone. Rather, they are men fearing something they do not understand and need a punitive god as small and vindictive as themselves.
I am moved by your thoughtful and faithful revelation of your own path to faith, and by your strength to live your truest self.
