Ummm… I actually knew several young women who graduated in the 1980s with a similar wardrobe. Heck, some of them wear the analogue to that still to this day. That prairie pattern of her blouse and type of sweater were not uncommon in the 1980s. When I was in college, c.1985, I actually had a skirt of a similar prairie pattern and a virtually identical sweater which I wore to church when I still attended my mother's church.

I also did not wear makeup back then as I did not break away from my parent's fundamentalist impositions of modesty until I was around 25 years old – well after I'd broken away from their church.

Also, those bows were "de riguer" for young women in general. We all wore them, from the wild child to the virginal – it was "the look" of the day, especially if you wanted to look preppy. Heck, even the Madonna wannabes wore a version of the bow. Big hair and flashy bows and other hair adornments were the look of the day.

I do agree she was portrayed as someone who should have been too smart to be tangled up with the rest of that crew.
