We've been headed there a very long time – since the Civil Rights Movement. The right have been plotting and scheming and patiently implementing their agenda step by egregious step. The Koch's accelerted it with the Citizen's United ruling and created the Dominion theology founded Tea Party out of whole cloth, which morphed into MAGAs.

Funnily enough, the Kochs seem to have recognized they went too far and have tried to disassociate themselves from any public connection to the MAGA progeny of their Tea Party brainchild.
