What she reportedly said was "let them eat brioche," if she said that quote at all. Brioche is a premium kind of bread then out of reach for the masses. I don't know if it was of reach because of the cost or because of sumptuary laws, though. But, if she said anything of the kind, it would still have been a blatant disconnect between the reality of what kind bread could be accessed those who were not royalty or nobility.
