Yeah. They're old. "Old" doesn't translate to natural bigot. My Gran was born in 1918. She grew lived the time those "old" bigots lived. It didn't stop her from defending the Black woman at the clothing mill when she was paid less (and that only for piece-work, no weekly wage) and blatantly sexually harassed by the floor manager.

She defended that coworker and lost her own job over it, then had to bear the anger of her abusive husband.

Being part of that generation for whom we're expected dismiss bigotry and hatred never stopped her from helping her Black and brown – and even gay neighbors. When a gay young man was being denied housing from everyone in the neighborhood, Gran rented him her trailer when it became available because the soldier who'd been renting it deployed overseas.

Kindness and compassion don't have anything to do with when you were born or whether you're family.
