Yes. He's willfully failing to see the disparity of the system's treatment of the Black officer in Tyre Nichols' case versu the white officers in George Floyd's case.

He's also failing to recognize that, while we do need more representative diversity, we do not need more cops. We need more professionals qualified to deal with non-policing issues, like mental health or child welfare calls. We also need more in-depth professional education requirements to be a cop.

Militarized police training should not be the only thing they're teaching before turning cops out on the streets. IME, cops should be required to hold community college degrees in criminology, sociology, and/or psychology, at the very least – something community and society oriented. And, getting that degree should be on the municipality's dime, just like the police academy. There really is no reason why they couldn't have prospective cops working with fully qualified as apprentice-cadets until they're degreed.

It's akin to the example of my son's paramedic training. He's working as a as an apprentice-EMT while he's pursuing his degree as a paramedic, paid for by the county. He graduated from a high school HSCA with full certification as an EMT, and went straight to work with the county as an apprentice-EMT. And, the county works with him on a flexible part time schedule while he gets to keep working as an EMT while pursing his degree. Of course, he's agreed to work as a paramedic in the county system for a period of time following graduation (five years, I think).
