Yes. I hear that California is more welcoming of LatinX migrants and immigranrts too. It seemed better in DC when we lived there briefly. But, in the Mid West and the South, "welcome" is not how I'd describe it. Don't get me wrong, you meet some very welcoming people – but they are not in the majority.
The gas-chamber threat was in here in NC, back in 2016. The incident came about because my son saw some kids bullying a new Spanish-speaking immigrant who was in one of his middle school classes. He stepped in between them and blocked someone trying to grab the kid. The block he used was from his taekwondo training and the kid's forearm came down hard on the block. My son was in his stance and the kid and his bully buddies backed off, but they threw that retalitory threat at my son.
Raleigh is better than the rural suburbs where we live. My son just graduated in Raleigh from an HSA as an EMT. When he was doing his internship, he found that the EMT uniform almost negates the bigotry.
